The stark contrast of new ship orders

While new orders for bulk carriers and tankers are stagnant and sluggish, orders for container ships and LNG carriers are booming, dominating the newbuilding market.
According to Clarksons data, new orders received during January 2011 totalled 64 ships of 4.2 million dwt and 1.5 million revised gross tons, a 59% decrease compared to the same period last year. Among them, the bulk carrier order is 31 ships of 2.8 million dwt, accounting for 66% of the total tonnage of the order. This is also the lowest record since 24 ships in September 2009.
Bulk new orders include 7 Capesizes, 9 Panamaxes, 13 Handysizes and 2 Handysizes, down 56 dwt compared to the same period last year %. For oil tankers, only 5 new orders of 10,000 dwt and above were received, while VLCC and Aframax tankers were not received. During this period, there were 1 Suez tanker, 1 Panamax tanker, 1 product oil tanker and 2 chemical tankers, with a total of 300,000 dwt, a year-on-year decrease of 91%. On the contrary, the number of new orders for LNG ships during this period was 5, which rose sharply, up 938% year-on-year. New orders for container ships also rose sharply, up 106% year-on-year. A total of 6 new orders for container ships of 8,000 TEU and 4 containers of less than 3,000 TEU were obtained.
